How to deal with stress during an online semester

the entire world is still dealing with this pandemic and while everyone’s life has been influenced by it, one that has influenced me the most is the shift in how my College deals with it. It is now my second semester with just online classes and I don’t know about you, but I find online semesters a lot more stressful. While I do think it is necessary to deal with this pandemic accordingly, and I am for online classes, I do feel like some of the lecturers, as the students, are overwhelmed with the situation and how to deal with it.

But, why?

First of all, a lot of the work lays with us, the students. If the lecturer decides to do an asynchron class, which means no video calls or uploaded video presentation, we have to do a lot of work to show that we do something for this class and did enough to gain the credit points. But even if the class is synchron, which means you have video calls or chats each week at the same time, you have to do a lot more than usually. Or at least, it feels like it. For a lot of students, even me, this means more stress and a lot of planning. And for a lot of students this is hard, because they do not know how to plan everything right.

I currently have nine classes, two are for my electives, which means I have seven classes for my major. I plan on writing two papers and take one oral exam, the rest of the classes I am doing for the credit points. This is a lot for a semester and I know that, but I have reasons for this. I am a semester away from starting my master thesis and I want to give myself enough time and space to do it right, which is why I want to have a pretty full semester now. I could have done it differently, but I personally am pretty organized and have found ways to deal with the stress.

Here’s how to deal with stress during an online semester

Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.

Plan everything out

I personally find it very helpful to have a weekly to do list. I like to write my task for each individual class with deadlines down and add things like home stuff to have an overall view. I also like to assign time slots in my calendar to the individual tasks. I plan the synchron classes and the asynchron classes the same, if I have a time slot free between classes where a asynchron class is assigned I will use this time to take a break but also to start the work for the asynchron class. It’s also a great feeling to tick off the to do list. Sometimes it gets overwhelming to see what you have to do in a week, so I like to make sure to categorize them in order of importance. Under each class I put the thing I definitely have to do and which needs the most time and then move forward to the next thing.

Take breaks

Breaks are very important especially when your doing all the work from home. In between classes I have around thirty minutes that I usually spent snacking, watching YouTube, shake my legs or do something at home that does not involve College work. I also make sure to have a lunch break around the same time every day that way I keep a routine down. For more about my daily routine, check out my blog entry from the other day:

It’s okay to ask for an extension

This is a difficult time and it is a stressful time, which is why a lot of lecturers a willing to give some extra time on your hand-ins and exercises. Just be truthful. It happens to the best of us. Accepting that you cannot do it all is sometimes the only way to accept the stress and deal with it properly. But, if you have a good plan and stick to it, it won’t be often that you will have to ask for more time.

Make sure to eat right

It sounds stupid, right? But, I have found that if you take time out of your day to prepare a whole meal and a healthy one at that it helps with keeping up your stamina. I like to eat at least two times a time a meal with vegetables or fruit. Meals and snacks that are well balanced keep your mind sharp and your energy level highs. Try to avoid highly processed food and too much sugar, I also found that I like to keep my caffeine intake low. If I do drink a coffee I like to keep the number at one.

Set boundaries

It is so easy to just keep working into the late hours, but a good night sleep is very important in stressful times. I personally do not work longer than around 7 pm. Everything over that just keeps me up at night. Sometimes, especially when you have something due, it can be difficult to stick to this timeframe, but for most days of the week I like to make sure that around 7 pm I am closing my laptop.

Do something besides College work

If you have a lot to do it is hard to find time to do something other than your College duties, but it is so important to make some time for family or friends or a hobby. I personally like to go for a walk or meet up with a friend to cook and watch a movie. But, whatever works for you is the best. I would suggest doing something physical, because we do tend to sit for a long time.

Getting back into a routine during Lockdown

I don’t know about you, but I had enough of this whole pandemic. But what can you do, right? Well, in the past couple of months I have been through all of the emotions. I felt sad, depressed, happy to have some time at home, emotional, blessed that so far, I haven’t gotten the virus and so much more. Especially the first few months were horrible. I am so dependent on seeing my friends, I have to see them at least once a week as well as my granny and all of them I couldn’t see. It was hard, but I got through it. We got through it.

As of Monday, we will go back into a light version of a lockdown, which means again a little more restraint and a lot less contact to people. I am also fully back at Uni (online) and am working (home office), so I spent a lot of time by myself in my apartment. But I’ve gotten a pretty good routine down, I would say. And I think even though we tend to stray from a routine with so much time at home, I truly think having a routine is the best. Especially for people, like me, who struggle.

I have a pretty busy schedule, all in all I have nine courses for Uni, and I work around seven hours, I also visit my grandma once a week to take care of anything she needs and to spend some quality time with her. So, my days a pretty packed, which is why it is important to have a structure.

Here is what I do:

I like to get up one hour or two before my day gets started with work or Uni. If I have gone to bed late or had troubles falling asleep, I sometimes only give myself like 45 minutes to get my day started, but that’s just a personal choice. Do what you prefer and are used to. If I hadn’t showered in the evening, I usually do this first thing in the morning. I don’t know about you, but I just can’t eat right away, especially with being home I don’t feel hungry at all. After some time in the bathroom, where I tend to at least somewhat comb through my hair and sometimes do a little bit of makeup to make myself feel better (all this heat from the radiator is messing with my skin), I like to get dressed in comfy bottoms and a big sweater and some fuzzy socks.

One thing I like to do right away getting out of bed is pulling up all the blinds and open my windows to get some fresh air into my apartment. I usually leave it open until I get a bit cold, which is usually around like two to three hours. After my time in the bathroom I go into the kitchen to make myself a hot tea or coffee, whatever I feel like that morning, and I also get some water. If by then I am hungry I will make myself a somewhat big breakfast, since I usually just snack during Lunch (no matter what I eat, warm food or salad, I get sluggish). I’m currently obsessed with cucumber and cream cheese, so I usually snack on that.

I usually have pretty good plan on what I have to do each day and also what I can do each day. Wednesday is my longest Uni day, which is why I usually just take part in the classes and actually use the breaks in between to move around and relax. It’s so important to get some movement in your day if you sit long hours at your desk, like I do. Besides making sure I move around I also like to call my grandma during lunch hours to just chat with her. If the weather allows it, I also like to go for a walk around the neighborhood to get some fresh air.

Something I didn’t do in the first lockdown is something I changed very quickly: I set myself on a time limit. It is so easy to just keep going with work, Uni stuff or something else, but taking time off is equally as important. So, I like to end my workday around 6 or 7 pm, if possible. That way I have enough time to cook and relax and take time for my nighttime skincare routine. It is so important to set yourself boundaries or else you’re constantly working and that is not healthy. It’s good to be productive and active during lockdown, but you cannot forget that this whole situation is still very stressful and emotional. It’s okay to take time for yourself.

Three Tips if you’re feeling stressed:

  1. Get out. Go for a walk. Listen to music or not. And just breathe.
  2. Workout. Something I haven’t been doing as much as I should, but it helps. There are so many great workouts you can do from home now.
  3. Talk to your family and friends about something else but Covid and work. It’s so important to keep up with the people you love when you cannot see them as much.

I also have to admit that my eating habits were so bad in the first lockdown and I felt not only my skin changing, but also my moods. That’s what I probably changed the most: I incorporate a lot of healthier foods and time slots for eating than I did before and I not only have more energy, but I also feel a lot better about myself.

Online Semester – Tips & Tricks

Like many of you I am bound to stay at home and have my summer semester at home. This is a scary time, so I thought it would be nice to tell you some of my tips and tricks on how I organize while studying and working from home. 

I am actually doing two master’s degree so my situation might be a little different than yours, but I feel like what I am about tell you applies to pretty much every college student. My semester was supposed to start early April, but because of the current situation my college decided to push the start off the semester for two weeks. Both my colleges actually pushed their start date, which meant I had a little bit more time to get adjusted to the new normal.

Now, I had a pretty rough period of adjusting around the end of March, but I made quick changes with my situation, so I could bare the situation a lot easier. If you want I can write a post about how I stay sane during this quarantine. Let me know in the comments.

Schedule your day

I know, everyone keeps saying this, but this actually does help. If you have a set schedule for each day you are likely to be more motivated and get stuff done. My lecturers have for the most part decided to not use any form of Zoom, although a handful does like to keep that option open. If you have classes that are on Zoom that actually helps a lot, because you need to sit at your laptop and actually do some school work. But, if your situation is like mine, here’s how you can schedule your day.

Set an alarm 

Sleeping in sounds good until you have to go back to normality. What I like to do is to set an alarm each day, even if it is a late one, just so I get out of back and start my day. 

Take time in the morning for yourself

Now, I’m normally an out of bed in my clothes and makeup and let’s-go type of gal, but since I am home I can actually take some time for myself. What I like to do is, first thing, is to wash my face or shower and put on some casual wear, sweatpants are totally okay. It helps me so much to wake up and feel productive if I get a little ready, so on some days I even put on a little bit of makeup, mostly for the days I have a Skype Call for work. I would do it normally, so why not in Quarantine, too.

Separate eating from work

One thing I learned is: take time to make a decent meal and eat it not while you’re working. It is so easy to just snack all the time or not eat healthy during this time, so taking time out of your day to cook and prepare good and nutritious food is so helpful. But, in my case cooking everyday can actually be difficult because I am that busy, so what I like to do is on the days I have a little more time I cook a bunch more so I have leftover’s for the days where I don’t have the time.

Write a To-Do List

Writing down each task you want to accomplish is essential for me. I like to do a weekly to-do list and write down deadlines next to it, so that I am free to do each day what I want to do but also am reminded of what definitely has to be don. If you get what I mean. And also, checking of something of a physical to-do list is just SO satisfying. Don’t you think?

Limit your work time

It is so easy to overwork yourself at home. Trust me, I know. While it is sometimes hard to get motivated, once you are it’s easy to stop yourself, because, well you basically have nothing stopping you. So what I like to do, is make sure to stop at a decent time each day. If I have a later start to the day I let myself work a little longer, and vice-versa. 

Go outside.

Confusing, right? But, you are actually for the most part allowed to get some fresh air into your system. I like to go on a 20 to 40 minute walk each evening, just to move my body a little and get some fresh air. If you are not allowed to do so, open a window and do a quick workout at home. Physical activity is so important especially for your mental health.

Make time to talk to people.

I know what gets me into a good mood and that is talking to friends and family, before, after and during work. It just gets me motivated. Talking to a friend is so helpful, because you can motivate each other. Just find what works for you.

Don’t stress yourself.

The most important thing during this whole thing is: DON’T STRESS YOURSELF. Seriously, if you don’t get something done, if you are stuck in front of Netflix an entire day, if you eat crappy: that is okay. This is a difficult and weird time and we don’t have to be perfect and productive each day. Be verbal about what you need and what you can do. If it’s too much, just tell someone. It helps.

How to survives as a College Freshman

I don’t know about you, but I was hella scared back in 2013 when I was a freshman. I didn’t know what to expect or how it turned out, but looking back on it the past few years have been such a great learning curve and all-in-all pretty amazing. I made some lifelong friends on the way which is such a nice bonus.

But, I also could have done a lot of things differently in the beginning. So, I thought it would be nice to tell you what I would do if I were a freshman now. Which honestly I’m kinda am again, since Monday is my first day back into classes as a Masters student.

Socialise + Make friends

Don’t be afraid to talk to new people. They’re all scared just like you are. Meeting new people and making friends is the best way to hold you accountable whether it being doing homework or actually going to class. With a friend it’s always more fun and you feel a lot more motivated.

Pick classes you think are fun

It is so important to also pick classes that you find interesting, you lose focus so much more likely if you’re not interested in the topic and there is nothing worse than having to finish a course that is absolutely boring. So if you have to have such classes in your schedule make sure to also pick ones that you really want to take.

Know where you have to go

I know for myself that my campus is really big and you don’t have every class in the same building which can be very tricky if you don’t know your way around. So make sure you always check out where the rooms/buildings are beforehand and always keep a note in your phone where the class is, trust me if you print it out or write it in your physical calendar you are much more likely to forget those than your phone.

Don’t buy too many supplies

It is highly likely that you only end up using your laptop, a pen and a few highlighters. You won’t need a lot of the stuff you thought you need. I now only buy new printer paper and post-its at the start of each semester, because honestly you don’t need much else.

Attend orientation + learn about the resources your school offers

That’s honestly just a given at this point, I think. You’re starting a new school, possibly one you don’t know much about and possibly without knowing anyone. So make sure you go to orientation. It truly helps with socialising and to clarify any questions you might have. Orientation is also a great way of finding out what resources your school offers, which might be handy in the long run.

Go to your classes

If you go, half the work is already done. Trust me on this. I thought I do not need to go, but it turns out going to your class is not only fun but also half the work. Well, almost. But you also get to see other people and socialise and get to strengthen your character with team work and other in-class activities.

Enjoy your time

It is important to focus on your school work, but it is also important to enjoy your life as a student. If you don’t find a balance between work and life you quickly become overworked and stressed. So find something to do besides College things.

My Last Semester as a Bachelor Student

Over a week ago I started my last week as a bachelor student. It’s finally the time to finish this and write my thesis. I can’t believe that I finished all of my exams and only have some courses left. It’s so weird thinking about the last six years especially about how far I’ve come. Honestly, never thought this time would actually come, but here it is.

I have a tough three and a half months ahead of me, but even though I might moan a lot about it, I’m ready for it.

A dream written down with a date becomes a goal.

A goal broken down into steps becomes a plan.

A plan backed by action becomes reality.

I have a to do list that is as long as my arm and I have to make so many decisions in the next few week, which kind of scares me a lot. But change is good sometimes, change sometime needs to happen. And I feel like this is one of those times where I need to move on.

My bachelor thesis is official registered and I have a due date. It is kind of super exciting to finally get into that phase of the work, but it also means I do have to work twice as hard as the last few months.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

Going on a Trip as a College Student

in today’s blog post I am going to talk about how I afforded a three day weekend away in Berlin with a friend for under 200 euros.

Now the main key is definitely timing. As a college student you are much more free with your time and not necessarily bound to any of the major travel seasons (at least for us students here in Germany). So, it is definitely always cheaper to travel off season. Another important factor is to set yourself a price limit, we had a price limit of 150 Euros per Person and we stayed in it (excluded is food).

Now we scavenged the internet for any possible offer. We ultimately landed on a page that only offers short trips (kurzurlaub.de). And we found a four star hotel for 70 euros for 2 nights and breakfast for one person, which is an amazing deal. Now, here are my tips to find something similar:

  • Don’t just look at one page for offers, we ultimately looked at four different sites and even Facebook. You could also check out Google, tripadvisor and so on, and of course AirBnB is always an option.
  • Don’t be set on a travel date, in the long run it is much better to be flexible with your dates. The one thing that was important to us was that we would be gone for a weekend and not under the week. But most of the times some of the offers are even better for under the week so if you have the possibility to go under the week I would highly recommend doing so.
  • We traveled with the DB (train), which was at the time the cheapest offer for our time frame once we found a hotel. We could have flown, but even with the cheapest flights we would have had to pay for luggage and that would have been a lot more than what we ultimately paid for our train tickets (we spent about 75 euros for the round trip)

Our total for hotel and train tickets was about a 150 euros for each person and we spend about 50 euros each for food and other things on the trip itself. Our total was almost exactly 200 bucks, which for 3 days in a big city is amazing. Don’t you think?

What I Learned from my Social Media Detox

So, it’s been a while, huh? Now, I wanted to share my experience about my month off of social media with you. I decided at the end of December 2018 that I needed a little break from social media, just to focus on my work for College as well as to concentrate on my mental health. 

Here’s what I did:

  • I rearranged all my apps into folders on my phone and shut down all notifications. The only noise my phone was making was when I got a phone call.
  • Rather than to completely shut of the notifications from WhatsApp and iMessage I let the messages pop up without making a sound, just so that if I were to pick up my phone I would see that somebody messaged me. I didn’t want to cut of contact to my friends, since I am not in school anymore so I rarely see everyone.
  • I also did not go on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or Snapchat for an entire month. I did open Instagram once, but mainly because I’ve forgotten to turn of the notification count on it and got a message and it drove me insane not knowing what was going on. After that I turned that off, too.

Here’s what I learned:

  • Taking time off of social media is extremely hard and you need a lot of self-control. For the first few days I felt so much FOMO (fear of missing out) that I almost quit, but I kept telling myself: “Girl, it’s just pictures, it’s just some stupid news. You don’t have to see everything.” And that actually helped quite a lot.
  • I learned that I cherish a message a lot more when I actually take the time to properly read and answer and that I don’t need to answer right away. That the “sorry for answering so late”-feeling I got before, what just absolute garbage. I am not obliged to answer my messages with a certain time frame, I am not obliged to answer them at all. I answer, because I want to.
  • A lot of social media is fake. A lot of news are fake. A lot of what is shared is absolute nonsense.
  • I miss sharing moments with friends who cannot be there.
  • I like being connected to the world.
  • Being “offline” is the best way to re-center yourself and get a fresh perspective on things.
  • Sometimes a little deflection isn’t the worst, but not always necessary.
  • Put your phone down, when you want to go to sleep.

Hey my loves,

Long time no see. How are you all doing?

I’ve been a little MIA since the beginning of this year and there have been many reasons why. First, I took some time away from social media the entire January and it was such a good experience. Then I just got way too busy with work and College stuff that I just did not have any time to create content for you guys. I would love to say that I am back with two entries a week but I think I cannot promise that, since I will be starting my last semester of my bachelor degree in April and simultaneously will start to work on my bachelor thesis. I am going to try to put up one entry per week, I think that will be do-able, but if not, please bear with me.

Now some things have changed since the last time we spoke to each other: I changed my hair. I was just not having as much fun with my long hair as I used to have, it just got to a length, where it did not look good unless I styled it, and that, for most days, took way to long. So one evening I cut it off, after going a little lighter in color. What do you think?

I am currently writing my last paper for my bachelor’s degree and am preparing to register my bachelor thesis, so a lot of reading has been happening for me. I cannot believe that I am actually almost finished, it feels so surreal. Would you like me to write a blog post about how I am feeling and how I am coping with things? Maybe even a little post about my future plans? What you think? Let me know.

What is there to be expected the next few weeks? Well, I have been on a short weekend away to Berlin with my best friend, so I will write a couple of entries about how we planned it, how we saw everything we wanted in one day and a little photo entry, maybe. I am also planning for a few college related contents, but if you have any suggestions or wishes, just let me know and I see what I can do.

Oh, and I have a new make-up routine, which I will share with you soon. And of course, I will write about my experience with a month off of social media. It will probably be my next entry.

2018 Review and Why I’m Taking A Break From Social Media

Last day of 2018: Can you believe it? And what a year it has been.

2018 changed a lot for me, I changed a lot. I grew immensely with each challenge I have tackled this year and I have managed to find a new way of living a much happier lifestyle. Each struggle made me stronger and each new chapter enriched my life so much.

I am also thankful for all the people in my life. My best friends, who I consider family, are always there for me and lift me up. They are right beside me through the good and the bed. And my family, my heart, who endlessly support me in everything that I do. I have so many wonderful people in my life and I couldn’t be more grateful for that.

A lot has happened this year, I wrote a lot of papers for College this year – and I mean A LOT. But I also found out that I am actually pretty good at writing. I also found a job which has me filled with so much joy and excitement, because I am constantly learning new things and get to experience a lot of things I wouldn’t have before. I also met some of the nicest colleagues and boss you could ever ask for. And I am super excited for all the things that will come up next. I also spend a lot of time on myself, eating healthier, exercising, making better choices. All of which lead to a much, much happier me.

Now I am not the biggest believer in New Year’s resolutions, so instead I always set myself goals that I want for the next few years that I can achieve and which I truly want to do. I won’t share my 2019 goals with you, those are my personal ones. But I am sharing with you something I will do for myself starting with January 1st. Social Media is a big part of my life, so is this blog and for that matter my phone. But I don’t want my life on these platforms. I want a life in real life. So in order to see if I have forgot how to actually life I will take some time away from Social Media and my phone. 

I decided to mute all my notifications, put all my apps except the ones I actually need for my lifestyle (like phone, calendar, mail and to a certain degree messages) into a folder and don’t touch them. First I was going to set myself a time frame, but I think I just have to see how long I can live with the FOMO. It’s going to be hard not to see what everybody is up to or answer all messages right that second. But I believe for myself, especially for my mental health, this will be good. This also means taking a break from my blog, I will probably still write some pieces, or write down ideas, but I won’t publish anything. At least for the entire January. This also gives me much more extra time in January since I have a million to-do’s for College and I want to focus my attention on these things. I obviously will write about my experience, but I don’t know when this will be. I don’t want to put any pressure on me, I just want to see, how I change and how my lifestyle is changing.

How To Save Money As A Student

in today’s blog post I am going to talk about how to save money when you are a broke student. Now I am not talking about saving up money for a house or a car or for traveling, what I am talking about is saving money for your everyday life – such as groceries, beauty products, stuff for your apartment or things you need for College.

Groceries 

You can save a lot of money on groceries and you might miss out on some great things. The first thing you have to remember while grocery shopping is “Is this something I want or need?”, because there lies the biggest fail while spending the money at the grocery store. What I like to do is to plan out my meals, but leave some room for things I want to change. I also incorporate weekly deals of my local grocery stores and stock up once a month on items like vegetable cans, frozen veggies and fruit, pasta, rice as well as things like oil, flour and sugar, basically everything that can last you a long time.

Beauty, Fashion & Lifestyle

We all know that shopping is one of the deathliest things to a student, you want all the things and you buy a lot of things that you might not really need. But the truth is, sometimes we need new clothes, new makeup or new furniture. And you can save money – there are especially a lot of student deals. I personally love to use Unidays, they have the best deals for my personal usage, but I also just like to Google for coupon codes, sometimes you find amazing deals. Another thing, which I feel like not a lot of people are aware of a newsletter coupon codes, they are rare, but truly worth it. 

College

Now as a student you probably are spending more money for College than anything else – from student supplies, books for your course to computers and printers. It can get expensive, so you got to be smart about it. As for laptops Apple always offers 10% off for students, which might not seem much, but you pay for quality. As for supplies I always like to go to the dollar store or anything where you can get your supplies for as cheap as possible. For books I like to find used books or change out books with other students that is a great way for you to save money.
